![]() ![]() Ben is a trans boy living in a time where the divide between genders was rigid, and so much of his struggle in the narrative centres on his fight against systems of oppression. Headstrong, confident Ben is proud of his status as the grandchild of a man as intimidating as Brom, but is plagued by threats from those who wish to control him. The narrative’s strength is down to its main character, Ben Van Brunt. It’s about legacy and cruelty, and the impartiality of the supernatural. Henry imagines what could have happened to Ichabod Crane, Brom and Katrina years after Crane disappeared, and what growing up in a village built on oppression and control, secrets, and the supernatural really looks like. It does not detract from the original narrative – instead it builds on lore, history and character by functioning as a sequel. Christina Henry’s Horseman offers a lot to the Sleepy Hollow story. ![]()
